United States-Mexico lifts part of meat export ban.

UNITED STATES.

MÉXICO LIFT 20 PLANTS FROM MEAT BAN.

Mexico took steps on Monday night to lift the ban on 30 United States meat plants, that was imposed on Tuesday evening 23 December.

There have been 20 plants sanctioned to resume exports again after diplomatic negotiations at the very highest level of government, in both Washington and Mexico city.

The larger beef and pork companies like Tyson’s, Smithfield and JBS-Swift, were in a position to source meat from alternative plants, as there are in fact 1,600 meat plants in the USA licensed to export to Mexico.

The government of Mexico have reiterated that this was not a trade war or political move, rather that the meat plants did not come up the sanitary requirements for Mexico.

Mexico is the main export market for US beef, veal, turkey and second largest for pork and third largest for poultry products.

The government of Mexico complained about the standard of sanitary, labeling, transportation which is quite an indictment on the USDA.
