Oregano supplement for pigs and poultry

Ropadiar, a feed supplement for pigs and poultry, based on the natural herb oregano, is being marketed by GE Baker (UK) Ltd of Woolpit, Suffolk, following 18 months of successful trial on farms in Yorkshire.

An appetiser and flavouring agent, it increases feed intake, and therefore growth rate, particularly among weaners and growing pigs as well as broilers. Improved performance has also been recorded in egg layers.

Made by Ropapharm International in the Netherlands, Ropadiar contains oregano oils extracted from specially-selected plants. These are said to contain antibacterial, antifungal, anti-parasitic and anti-oxidative properties as well as having a positive effect on the immune system.

Ropadiar has been thoroughly researched in the Netherlands with significant benefits being recorded. It is also used in lactation diets in that country, where farmers have reported heavier weaning weights following increased feed intake by the sow.

Suitable for both feed manufacturers and home-mixers, it is available in 25 kg bags and 7.5 kg tubs. Ropadiar is added to diets at between 150g and 500g per tonne. Being a natural product, no withdrawal time is necessary.
