Milk leaves low carbon footprint

Milk has emerged top of a scientific index, ranking drinks in terms of their environmental sustainability coupled with their nutritional value.

Commenting on the research Dr Judith Bryans, Chief Executive of The Dairy Council, said: "this is because of milk’s high nutrient content. We’ve known for some time that milk compares favourably with other drinks in terms of its carbon footprint. Now it’s clear that milk can make a significant positive contribution to the sustainable diet."

The study has been published in the Journal of Food and Nutrition Research.
