Lion eggs call on manufacturers to meet demand

A study of consumer shopping habits has revealed that the British Lion mark does really make a difference, with almost half of shoppers, looking to purchase an egg sandwich, more likely to buy the sandwich that displayed the British Lion logo on pack.

The interviews were carried out with consumers at the sandwich fixture in a well known multiple retailer over a period of two months. The research confirms that the presence of the Lion mark, already on 90% of shell egg packs, is also important to consumers for products containing eggs.

When asked what seeing the British Lion mark on egg sandwich packaging meant to them, more than 90% of respondents agreed that "It shows that the egg is good quality". And, when questioned about price, more than 80% of respondents said that they would be willing to pay an additional 2p on the current price if the Lion Mark was present. Almost a third said they were prepared to pay an additional 10p.

Clive Frampton, spokesman for British Lion egg products, said: "Increasingly, consumers are actively seeking British produce and the research findings underline this. Consumers expect the eggs in products such as sandwiches to be British and there is no reason why that should not be the case. Lion egg products are produced to stringent quality standards and this is clearly important to consumers.

"Many retailers and food manufacturers already specify Lion egg products to ensure food safety and quality but there is no doubting that it should be more widespread, certainly from the consumer’s perspective."
