Food supplies in jeopardy 'unless margins improve'

THE supermarkets rule the high streets – but they must work with their suppliers, one of Scotland’s most influential farming officials has warned.

Jim McLaren, the president of NFU Scotland made his thoughts clear during discussions with Richard Brasher, the commercial director of Tesco.

Communication and concerns over robust food labelling were on the agenda plus the appointment of a suADVERTISEMENTpermarket ombudsman, something all the food producing organisations in the UK have been demanding. The supermarkets appear now to be aware of the fact that future food supplies are on a knife-edge: farmers will simply not produce unless there is a worthwhile margin for them in the extended food chain.

Mr McLaren stressed that point saying: "Tesco certainly appears open to stocking many Scottish food and drink items and we commend them for this commitment.
