Farmers meet with police over theft worries

’I fully recognise and appreciate the devastating effect that theft has on the rural, isolated communities of Brecon and Radnor. I do however want to reassure farmers, that as a Police Force, we are fully committed to keeping rural Powys safe.’ This was the message given recently to Brecon and Radnor NFU Cymru members by Dyfed Powys Police Chief Inspector Martin Taverner.

The NFU Cymru Brecon and Radnor county meeting, held on the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, was arranged for farmers to voice their concerns following a recent spate of thefts of ATVs, 4x4 vehicles, fuel and tools in the area. The meeting provided was an opportunity for the Chief Inspector to learn first-hand of the experiences of affected farmers throughout the county.

Chief Inspector Taverner added, ’There are more border patrols taking place with neighbouring Forces but vigilance is key. We have had some good success stories recently and I really hope we can build on these. Any sightings of unusual activity or suspected thefts should be reported immediately to Dyfed Powys Police using the 101 or in emergencies, 999. One sighting can be crucial.’

Glasnant Morgan, NFU Cymru Brecon and Radnor Chairman concluded, ’There are many of us who have fallen victim to rural thefts and we are vulnerable to crime in rural areas of Brecon and Radnor due to the remoteness of some properties. It is heartening to hear of some of the arrests and recoveries made resulting in property being returned to some victims over recent weeks. I sincerely hope that the Force take on board the concerns raised by these farmers and that thorough investigations take place when a report is made.’
