Safer emptying of big bags

Safety issues in handling big bags have led Tong Peal to launch a new design tipper which empties big bags from the top.

Big bags, often holding more than one tonne of produce, are conventionally emptied through a sock at the bottom. The bag has been suspended by a fork lift and the operator unties the 'sock'. But there have been increasing health and safety concerns about the wisdom of such a technique.

Now Tong Peal — one of the leaders in box and bag filling and tipping technology — are introducing a new range which slowly inverts the box or bag so that the produce gently feeds into the intake hopper.

One big advantage is that the user is well away from the machine as it operates. The main advantage, however, is that the crop leaves the big bag at the top and gently flows out without bruising the tubers. This is a major improvement on the old system which squeezes the crop through the 'sock' causing bruising and compression damage.

The tipper is designed to handle polypropylene bags holding up to 1.3 tonnes of produce. These bags are increasingly being used in preference to boxes, particularly for export trade.

A big bonus for customers is that the machine will also tip boxes, so a two-in-one design means only one machine for both jobs – a major cost saving.

The tipper can handle up to 10 tonnes / hour in bags, or up to 20 tonnes /hour in boxes measuring up to 1.8 metres long.
