Royal Show Livestock Entries Up

Royal Show Livestock Entries Up

Livestock farmers are flocking to the Royal Show this year determined to have a chance to win at the last ever show.

Show organiser the Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) say that final figures show an increase in sheep, beef and pigs, while dairy entries, which will not close until 22nd June, are well ahead of the 2008 figures. Entries for Honey and Honey products, which also come under the livestock categories, have more than doubled since last year.

RASE’s Livestock and Equine Manager, Sarah Deeming said: "We are delighted with the response we have received. Most classes are up on last year, and the last Royal Show will be a bumper year as far as livestock is concerned. In particularly, the number of entries in the pig category is the best for 10 years. We are still processing the equine entries for this year, but I am confident that all classes will have as many entries as last year if not more. The Royal Show has always featured the very best of British livestock, and this year will be no exception."

Notable increases include beef up from 955 in 2008 to 1329 this year, sheep up from 1090 to 1164, and pigs up from 204 to 322. Entries for dairy do not close until June 22nd, but already 174 stalls have been booked, compared to 73 in 2008. Despite the well-documented problems in the honey industry, honey and honey products have more than doubled since last year, rising from 151 entries in 2008 to 364 this year.

RASE has also announced that Cattle Ring B at this year’s show will be sponsored by The Agricultural Mortgage Corporation plc (AMC). Paul Spencer, Agriculture Director of AMC said:

"We are proud of our association with the Royal Show over many years and wanted to ensure that we marked the final show in an appropriate manner. The cattle rings are the farming heart of the show where farmers and public alike gather to see British agriculture at its best."
