Injector gun to treat sheep against fluke

Merial Animal Health has produced a new injector gun specifically designed for treating sheep with its flukicide Trodax®. The new smaller gun will allow farmers to administer an accurate dose between 0.5 ml (14 – 20 kg weight range) and 2.5 ml (over 75 kg), depending on the weight of the animal.

Merial’s Veterinary Adviser Fiona MacGillivray said: "In recent years cases of liver fluke have increased in terms of timing of infection, geographic distribution and prevalence. In sheep liver fluke can be fatal and at best will significantly impair the health, performance and productivity of affected animals. Therefore, it is important to have a control strategy in place to deal with this damaging and costly parasite."

"Trodax® is fast-acting and highly effective, killing both immature and adult liver fluke. Furthermore, whilst there have been increasing numbers of cases of resistance reported to triclabendazole, found in a number of products widely used to treat sheep, there are no reported cases of resistance to nitroxynil, the active ingredient in Trodax. This makes Trodax an ideal option for the treatment of fluke in sheep and the introduction of the smaller injection gun will make administration even easier."
