Prices of up to ’2,300 were recorded at a well attended sale of 70 pedigree Hereford cattle at Shrewsbury Auction Centre on May 17.
The sale, conducted by auctioneers Halls is association with Hereford Cattle Breeders Association, attracted potential buyers from across the UK, which ensured competitive bidding and prices well above expectations.
Cows and calves sold to a good demand, with the top price of ’2,300 going to Maria Pansy 24th, a 2006 cow in-calf to Injemira Advance and with her February born bull calf at foot. They were sold by Messrs Timbury, Chapel Farms. Other leading prices for cows and calves were ’1,380 and ’1,320.
Top price for in-calf heifers was ’1,200 for Messrs Ford Abbey Farms’ 28-month-old heifer in-calf to Leo Pride 1 Ellis for August. Many other heifers sold above ’1,000.
A strong trade for bulling heifers peaked at ’1,060 for a March, 2010 born heifer from The Broadstone Herd of Mr W. J. Hodges, Churchstoke, who also sold three others at ’1,000 per head. All four heifers were purchased by a Scottish buyer.
The two breeding bulls on offer - a two-year-old from Mr John Pritchard of Granhams Moor and a four-year-old from Messrs M. D. M. Farming if Leebotwood ’ sold for ’1,800 and ’1,250 respectively.
Shrewsbury Auction Centre manager Nick Hyne, a director of Halls, said he was delighted with the national interest generated by the sale and the excellent prices achieved.
