Galvanising firm goes the extra mile for cattle market

A galvanizing firm has been called upon to help create almost 19 miles of steel tubes being used as part of the production of more than 300 animal pens at a major new cattle market.

Liverpool-based Merseyside Galvanizing, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has been tasked with galvanizing more than 120 tonnes of steel that is being used by agricultural fabrication company Global Livestock Solutions Limited to design and manufacture all the cattle and sheep holding pens at the new North West Auctions cattle market currently being built in Kendal, Cumbria.

Using bespoke Computer Aided Design (CAD) and state-of-the-art laser cutting equipment, Global Livestock Solutions Limited has turned the steel into a series of high-quality 48mm-wide tubes used to put together all the fences and gates needed to produce the 2.7 m2 pens. Galvanizing the metalwork will ensure it is protected long-term against all the highly corrosive animal waste, urine and slurry it will be subjected to.

Lee Booth, Director of Lancashire-based Global Livestock Solutions Limited, commented: “Merseyside Galvanizing has done a sterling job for us and we couldn’t have been happier, the quality of the galvanizing is second to none. We’ve been working together on this project since March, and have been sending at least two or three lorry loads of steel to be galvanized each week.

“On one occasion, on the Tuesday after the May Bank Holiday, we sent a load to be galvanized at 8.30am in the morning, which was processed and delivered to the site in Kendal by 1pm on the Wednesday, a turnaround time which in my years of experience in the industry is unsurpassed.”

The new North West Auctions cattle market, based in South Lakeland just off the A65 near to Kendal, is set to open in August. The facility will house two sales rings, hundreds of livestock pens, more than 1,800 m2 of auction rooms and offices, as well as a café and seminar area.

Richard Smetham, Commercial Manager of Merseyside Galvanizing, said: “The bespoke design, high-quality production processes, and galvanizing used in the production of these pens will ensure they are protected long-term against rust and corrosion, meaning the cattle market can operate with confidence for years to come.”

Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back more than 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
