HGCA has announced the appointment of Dr Simon Oxley to the role of Senior Research and KT Manager (Recommended Lists and Agronomy) following a nationwide search.
Dr Oxley will head up the team responsible for producing the Recommended Lists for cereals and oilseeds when he joins HGCA in May following the retirement of long-standing Recommended Lists Lead Manager Dr Jim McVittie.
Well-known across the industry as a researcher and crop advisor through his work with SAC in Edinburgh, he brings with him more than 25 years experience in plant pathology. Recent research work includes using molecular diagnostics and field observations to develop practical control methods of major pathogens of arable crops and a Scottish Government-funded project to develop durable host defence strategies to improve barley disease management and reduce fungicide use.
Over the years Dr Oxley has worked closely with HGCA, leading several research projects including the Barley Fungicide Performance project, assessing and running Recommended List trials and serving as a member of the wheat and barley variety selection committees.
Head of Research and KT Dr Susannah Bolton said: "We are delighted to welcome someone of Simon’s professional standing and calibre to the team.
"Simon’s expertise will be invaluable to continue to drive HGCA’s Recommended Lists and wider agronomy work forward, ensuring we meet the challenges that are faced both on-farm and by the end user."
Dr Oxley said: "I am looking forward to working with my new team at HGCA and hope we can add value to the Recommended Lists through better integration with HGCA research activities, providing the industry with practical information based on good science."
