Youngsters will be tucking into a healthy breakfast at the Great Yorkshire Showground and trying their hand at sausage making as they take part in the national Farmhouse Breakfast Week 2004. (25 January – 31 January)

On Monday 26 January, 113 children aged between 7 and 9 years will be "Breakfast Guests" of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society where they will learn more about where their food comes from and the importance of eating healthily.

Nigel Pulling, Chief Executive of the Society said: "The industry produces a lot of good quality local food and this of course starts with our farmers. We are delighted to be highlighting this link through what I am sure will be a very enjoyable morning."

As well as having breakfast the youngsters from Saltergate Community Junior School in Harrogate will have a go at making sausages with farmer/butchers, Grant and Mark Burton, take part in a competition identifying fruit, learn about the origins and uses of different cereals through a "crops in pots" quiz and discuss how to start the day with a nutritious breakfast.

Chris Taylor, Headteacher said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn about the importance of eating properly and to consider many issues concerning food. This event should help them to develop an understanding of how food is produced and where it comes from."

The event has been organised by the Society's Education Adviser, Di Brabbs as part of the Farmhouse Breakfast Week run by the Home Grown Cereals Authority.
