Cattle breeding company Cogent has added a breed-leading Limousin bull to the Signature Beef range, which brings together an almost unparalleled combination of genetic potential and show ring performance.
Gerrygullinane Glen has Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) in the top one per cent of the Limousin breed for a range of important growth and carcase traits. This includes 200 and 400 day growth rates (52 and 93 respectively), muscle depth (7.1) and a huge Beef Value of 46.
The combination of these breed-leading EBVs and his own superb appearance, together with an outcross pedigree, give Glen an exceptional value to the beef industry.
His striking appearance did not go unnoticed in his native Ireland, where he won a succession of shows including the reserve junior championship at the All Ireland Limousin Calf Finals before being purchased by an English breeder.
Glen was spotted by Christine Williams of the Wilodge herd in Shropshire, during a judging trip to the Irish Republic. After selecting the bull as her breed champion, she described him as a ‘must have’ bull, and went on to purchase him for an undisclosed five-figure sum.
“At less than eight months old, Glen was one of the youngest animals in his class,” says Miss Williams. “But he stood out to me for his tremendous growth and power and that indefinable X-Factor.”
Describing the bull as exhibiting extreme muscularity, impressive testicular development, spring of rib and standing four-square on very correct legs, she says his exceptionally chilled temperament has proved to be the icing on the cake.
Her observations are echoed by Boomer Birch, beef specialist with Cogent, who will be marketing his semen from this month.
“Glen is modern, clean, stylish, very correct and full of breed character and will do a tremendous job on any herd rearing beef, whether they are pedigree Limousin or cross-bred animals,” he says.
However, he says that he is particularly excited to be working with this bull’s pedigree which represents bloodlines which have not been brought together in an AI sire before.
His sire is the Ronick Hawk son, Machermore Augustus and his dam is Derrygullinane Daisy, whose back pedigree includes Mas Du Clo and Genereux.
