Liz Truss has reiterated the Government's commitment to hospitals, schools, prisons and other publicly-funded institutions serving British rather than imported meat, claiming "Defra staff now go to work on British, not Danish, bacon".
But the National Pig Association remains concerned about a specific 'get-out-of-jail-free card' which allows contractors to supply lower-welfare imported pork if buying British leads to a significant increase in costs.
The NPA has prepared a template letter for members to send to their constituency MPs asking them to help close the loophole.
The NPA reiterates that it is particularly important this government commits to sourcing British food, as it was a Conservative government that introduced the unilateral stalls ban, which had a profound affect on the largely unsubsidised British pig sector.
"This letter is designed to maintain the positive momentum we've achieved so far, and to ensure Government is held to account with regards to its commitments to British pork and pig producers," says NPA policy services officer Lizzie Wilson.
