A new welfare training DVD covering best practice for the catching, handling, transport and slaughter of commercial poultry has been launched by the Humane Slaughter Association.
Poultry Welfare – Taking Responsibility is the first training DVD to be produced by the HSA with a specific focus on poultry, covering broilers, hens, turkeys, ducks, geese and quail, and is the white meat equivalent of the successful HSA red meat training video Humane Slaughter – Taking Responsibility.
Together with an accompanying booklet, the new DVD provides comprehensive practical welfare guidance to catching teams, transport drivers, lairage workers and all involved with the slaughter of poultry.
The DVD is part of the HSA’s wide range of training, education and advisory services, publications, research and technical development work that provides practical solutions for establishing and maintaining high standards of food animal welfare during transport, at markets and at slaughter.

And the HSA will soon be announcing the first winners of it new ‘improving welfare of poultry during catching’ award. The award will be presented to the processing plant or independent catching team which is judged to have made the greatest improvement to animal welfare in one of the following ways:
- Best catching training programme
- Best catching protocol
- Best innovative equipment /system to improve catching of one or more poultry species
The winners will be awarded a plaque and £1000 towards further initiatives to improve bird welfare during catching and handling for slaughter.
