The launch by Intervet of Vectin 0.08%, a new broad spectrum sheep wormer, complements the company's existing range of drenches – Panacur and Levacur SC - and now provides farmers with a complete package to control roundworms and reduce the risk of resistance developing.
Vectin 0.08% contains ivermectin, a member of the macrocyclic lactone (ML) family of wormers, to which resistance in the UK is uncommon. It can be used for the treatment and control of gastro-intestinal roundworms, lungworms and nasal bots.
Coinciding with the launch of Vectin 0.08%, a new set of industry-wide strategic worming guidelines has been announced. Intervet's large animal vet adviser, Alasdair King, states that there have been some important advances in worm control recommendations which are as a result of changes in the way we farm, changes in parasite lifecycles and distribution, and the need to look at the sustainable use of anthelmintics.
"Correct drenching technique, adhering to recommended dose rates and rotating chemical groups are all still part of the new guidelines", advises Mr King. "The most significant advice, however, relates to frequency of worming and dosing onto clean pasture."
Intervet is producing a Frequently Asked Questions booklet, offering easy-to-read advice on drenching sheep and the new guidelines. Copies can be ordered free of charge from Intervet by calling 01908 685685. The guidelines will shortly be on-line on Intervet's new website www.intervet.co.uk.
Vectin 0.08% comes in 2.5 litre, 5 litre and 10 litre packs, and is available from your usual animal health supplier.
