Herdsperson job - dumfries and galloway, scotland

We require an additional person do join our small team to milk and manage a herd of 200 Pedigree Holsteins. We are located near Lockerbie, South West Scotland.


 


The Candidate


We are looking for an experienced individual who is reliable & self motivated. Excellent communication skills are must to successfully work as part of a small team. The candidate must strive to work to a high standard and be pro active in herd health and cow wellbeing. We do not require AI or foot trimming skills as these services are provided externally.


 


The Role


Key responsibilities of this position would be:




  • Milking 4am and/or 3pm


  • Monitor cow health and detect illness


  • Keep milking and dairy areas clean to aid the production of high quality milk


  • Maintain accurate records


  • Daily cow shed duties including sawdusting and scraping


  • Share in night check duties involving monitoring calvers and pushing up silage



 


The Farm


The family have been farming for over 60 years. The farm is located 3 miles from the town of Lockerbie. The farm is now in its 3rd generation. Lockerbie is located right on the M74. The town has many local amenities such as shops, pubs, hotels, schools and clubs for every interest.


 


The Herd


The milking herd consists of 220 Pedigree Holstein cows and calf all year round. All calves are kept and reared on the farm. Our replacement heifers are all bred at home and come into the main herd. We use a local contractor for AI and Foot Trimming. The cows are housed in winter and out to grass in Spring/Summer. All fields are easily accessible with good tracks. The cows are also fed to yield in the parlour during milking's. All sheds have automatic scrapers, mats or mattresses then bedded with sawdust. The cows are milked through a 12/12 De Leval swing over Parlour.


Construction has started for the installation of 4 De Leval Robots & New Cow Shed on a green field site on farm. The new set up will be live by June 2025.
