Winter Pruning of Fruit Trees

East Malling Short Courses, Kent
Course overview
Our winter pruning workshop at East Malling Research will deal with top fruit varieties including apples, pears, cherries and plums.

You will find out how to make the most of your garden and how you can produce a good crop of juicy fruit in a small area.

Winter pruning will focus on seasonal winter pruning of fruit trees. Through these classes, participants will learn how to manage a fruit crop in a small area, how to control tree growth and what to do when things appear to get out of hand.

These will take place partly in the Hatton Fruit Garden; formerly the kitchen garden of the Grade 1 listed Bradbourne House. Plantings in the Hatton Fruit Garden were inspired by the fruit plantings in Louis XIV’s kitchen garden at Versailles. The fruit trees have been trained and pruned over many decades to produce cordons, espaliers, goblets, pyramids, fans, arches, crowns, le bateau and arcure forms.
