Please click here to contact us.From 1st July 1998 it became a requirement under the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order (WATO) 1997, for“…anyone who transports cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or horses on journeys of 8 hours or more, to entrust animals only to the care of staff who have demonstrated that they are qualified to handle, transport, care for and safeguard the welfare of the animals”.This Award has been approved by DEFRA for the assessment of the fifteen operator competences listed in the WATO Guidance Notes.WATO includes those in the industry who are self employed, including independent livestock hauliers and farmers having their own stock. Livestock Farm Assurance Schemes and supermarkets are increasingly requiring that all livestock within their scheme are transported only by drivers who have achieved the Certificate of Competence.A candidate must hold the relevant Department of Transport Driving License if they are to drive a livestock transporter vehicle on the road whilst undertaking the assessment activities in unit 4.
