Wheelbirks Farm

Wheelbirks Farm in South Northumberland has been owned by the Richardson family since 1882. Dairy farming commenced in 1925 when a pedigree Jersey herd was introduced to this lush 360 acre estate. Eighty-eight years later, fifth generation farmers Hugh and Tom Richardson still proudly continue to manage the 120 strong closed Jersey herd. Although not directly affected by the Foot & Mouth crisis of 2001, the situation gave us reason to reflect on the sustainability of our business and we decided to diversify by further developing produce from our dairy herd. It was decided that our cows were our unique selling point, especially as we have the only pedigree Jersey herd in Northumberland. Following the sale of our sheep flock we were able to purchase ice cream making equipment, attend courses and then launch our ice cream business in 2002.

Initially we sold our ice cream and Jersey milk from our farmhouse porch using an honesty-box. Over the following years, due to the popularity of our product, we sold our ice cream to local shops, pubs, restaurants.

REALISED OUR DREAM

In March 2010 we realised our dream with the opening of Wheelbirks Parlour, a place that would sell not only our popular ice cream but also a range of home-made meals and snacks. The Parlour has been busier than we had ever imagined and has grown from strength to strength since we opened. We have a varied and ever changing menu, including a bespoke children’s selection. Our ice cream flavours have diversified from the old favourites like vanilla and chocolate, ranging to the more exciting mojito sorbets or garlic ice cream! The Parlour can seat 150 people with indoor and outdoor play areas for children of all ages. Our Victorian orchard is the perfect place to sit on a sunny day.
