Lakeham Alpacas is the realization of a dream that began in the 1950's when Liz Brookes first saw beautiful garments made from Alpaca yarn, brought back from Peru by her businessman father. When the opportunity arose in 2000 to acquire a starter herd she took it up enthusiastically and from an initial 7 females bought from Bozedown Alpacas, developed on to its current size of 41.
Much mainstream alpaca breeding is aimed at white fleeced animals which give processors maximum choice in dyeing. Lakeham Alpacas has instead a policy of developing alpacas that display the wonderful range of natural fleece colours, in conjunction with breed improvement through the use of top quality stud males from major breeders including Classical MileEnd Alpacas, Bozedown Alpacas and Alpha Alpacas.
Making contact with other breeders and introducing a wider public to alpacas and their qualities has led us to attend County and Agricultural shows. Most people seeing alpacas for the first time ask “What do you do with them”? This led us to develop our banner ‘Alpacas for All Reasons’
After 16 years of breeding alpacas, we have joined forces with a few other, local breeders to offer a wider choice of animals to our Clients. Our first venture was the formation of the Dartmoor Alliance with West Webburn Alpacas This is a loose Co-operative which enables us to share resources and offer support to Clients in the Dartmoor Area.
