Young Producer weekend highlights organic opportunities

12-13 July 2008 - Hankham Organics, Pevensey, East Sussex

The Organic Futures 'Young Producer Weekend' in partnership with the Soil Association is aimed at young and aspiring horticulturists interested in gaining a valuable insight into the workings of a viable commercial organic growing business. Resident growers Miles Denyer and Peter Dollimore, who between them have over 20 years of organic farming experience, will be sharing both their practical and business knowledge through interactive sessions. The weekend will also highlight the importance of conservation and wildlife with a walk around neighbouring Montague Farm.

Organic farming is helping to reverse the decline in the UK's agricultural workforce, which has fallen by 80% in the last 50 years. Research has shown that organic farming delivers 32% more jobs per farm on average across the UK and revealed that organic farmers are younger, more optimistic about the future of farming and more entrepreneurial.

Soil Association horticultural development manager Ben Raskin said,

"This is a fantastic opportunity not only to gain valuable technical insight but also a great chance for a social get-together with fellow horticulturists and producers. The Soil Association recognises the importance of developing positive solutions to overcome the key barriers that are preventing more young people from entering farming. Wherever you're at, this event has something to offer you."

The Organic Futures team have already been engaging with students at colleges around the country to inspire, inform and enable the next generation of organic farmers and growers to breathe life back in to rural Britain.
