Welsh egg producer serves up ’Glamping’ prize

A couple who run a multi-award winning Welsh free range egg company have come up with a cracking competition to celebrate 30 happy years of selling eggs in their wonderful environment.

Tony and Gwen Burgess, of Birchgrove Eggs, Trawsgoed, near Aberystwyth, are giving everyone who buys and uses their eggs a chance to win a two night ’glamping’ break in a luxury tipi in a stunning Mid Wales valley.

Eco Retreats, established eight years ago by Michael and ChaNan Bonser, is among the forerunners of the "glamping" genre that has recently become so popular.

The competition, which is printed on all packs of Birchgrove Eggs – more than 2,000 are produced every week – was launched on St David’s Day and already there has been a steady flow of entries.

"We wanted to do something special to celebrate 30 years in business ," explained Tony. "We came up with the eco break in the heart of the stunning Welsh countryside because it reinforces our environmental credentials.

"We have won a lot of awards for our sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint and the short break with Eco-Retreats is an unusual and extremely relaxing carbon neutral prize.

"There are no pesticides or herbicides on the farmland used by our hens, which is why we have so much wildlife and wildflowers for our curious chicks.

"Our eggs are fully accredited to the RSPCA Freedom Food scheme, which ensures the highest standards of both welfare and production methods are maintained."

Their business philosophy has paid off, as they have won a string of awards, including Wales the True Taste Food and Drink Awards and Poultry Farmer of the Year.

The couple has also recently launched Birchgrove Real Mayonnaise for the catering and wholesale sectors, which is going down a storm.
