Two charities benefit from farmers’ fundraising

One thousand pounds has been split and donated to two Welsh charities thanks to NFU Cymru members in Glamorgan.

During the recent Glamorgan NFU Cymru Conference £500 was presented to Malcolm Thomas on behalf of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI). The other £500 cheque was presented to Stephen James, the Deputy President of NFU Cymru, as a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Society, the Union’s chosen charity for 2012.

On presenting the cheques, Andrew Oliver, Glamorgan NFU Cymru County President said, "On behalf of Glamorgan NFU Cymru I am privileged to be able to present these cheques to two worthwhile causes and a special thank you must go to all NFU Cymru members and staff in Glamorgan who have over the past 12 months organised and taken part in many events, including a golf day and an NFU Cymru county luncheon."

There are over 40,000 people with dementia in Wales and numbers are set to rise to 55,000 by 2021. The Alzheimer’s Society champions the rights of people living with dementia and the millions of people who care for them. The Society’s local services include day care and home care for people with dementia, as well as support and befriending services to help partners and families cope with the demands of caring.

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) is a grant-making charity that supports members of the farming community facing need, hardship or distress. It was founded in 1860 and has an unbroken history of providing long-term care and emergency help. The help is provided for retired farmers, farm workers and working farmers and their families who find themselves in financial difficulties.
