The fight for the top job in farming - Minette Batters pledges to stand for NFU President

NFU President Meurig Raymond will be facing a challenge from his deputy Minette Batters for control of the National Farmers Union leadership.

Minette Batters has already served two years as Deptuty President, but has now decided the time is right to run against incumbent President Meurig Raymond. The NFU leadership elections take place next month.

Ms Batters is backed by virtually every county branch in the South West, making a vote of confidence which will put herself forward for the leadership, as well as standing again as deputy.

Ms Batters, who farms suckler beef near Salisbury in Wiltshire, was elected deputy president of the NFU two years ago and has made a strong impression in the role.

She was understood to be initially reluctant to challenge for the top job, especially given that Welshman Mr Raymond, who served as deputy for eight years before becoming president in 2013, is popular with farmers.

He has made himself clear that he will be standing for re-election, making an interesting matter of affairs when the leadership elections take place.

However, some commentators believe the NFU needs a leader who can communicate the farmers' message more effectively and widely to consumers. Ms Batters, with a background in catery and a strong interest in linking food with farming, is seen by many as the rght person to reinforce the Buy British message.
