The Royal Welsh vows to tackle challenges

“As we look back and reflect on another successful year we must also look forward” said John Davies, The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s chairman of the board of directors.

In his speech at the society’s annual council meeting Mr Davies explained how the society has created a new strategic group to help identify challenges and opportunities and assist in shaping and influencing the future of the society and the agricultural industry in order to get the best for our members and the wider agricultural community.

“We can be confident that any future challenges are understood and tackled head on and that we will make the most of every opportunity.” promised Mr Davies.

Since last year’s meeting the society has been working hard to deliver the vision to build on traditional values whilst exploiting opportunities to become more efficient, reduce costs, cut out waste and increase income. The success of which is clearly showing on the society’s balance sheet.

Cost reduction plans and efficient contract management has seen projects to invest in the showground delivered on time and for less than the predicted budget. Over £90,000 has been saved on capital and feature county projects alone.

The new 150kw solar PV system on the food hall roof is already paying dividends of around £25,000 a year – the first step in our drive to reduce our energy bills.

We will go forward and continue to invest in other projects to further improve the facilities here at Llanelwedd. Work on improving the stockman’s accommodation at Neuadd Henllan as part of the Radnor 2014 project has already begun and we are already working hard on plans for the Equine Project which will begin during the Gwent 2015 feature year.

“Although figures are not always the best way to measure success, it is important to recognise that the society has more members than ever before which is a gauge of people’s loyalty and respect and demonstrates their commitment and confidence in the future of the society.” add Mr Davies.
