An excellent entry of 375 store cattle went under the hammer at Bishops Castle & District Quality Cattle Association’s annual May sale.
Despite the falling beef trade, auctioneers Halls reported that prices held firm throughout the day, with buyers around the sale ring from near and far. Overall steers averaged 235p per kilo and £1,00 per head, with highs of £1,230 for a Charolais from Messrs Davies of Monksfield and 290p per kilo for a Blonde D’Aquitaine from Probert & Probert, Lower Hill.
Heifers averaged 223p per kilo and £845 per head with a maximum of 363p per kilo and £1,380 for a 380 kilo Limousin from M. & A. Powell, Drefor.
Other leading prices for steers were: Charolais cross: £1,230 for a 585 kilo steer from Messrs Davies, Monksfield Farm and 242p per kilo for 430 kilo steer from Messrs W. D. & M. E. Parry, Caetwp. Limousin cross: £1,210 for a 580 kilo steer from Messrs K. J. & D. M. Burton, Red House Farm and 288p per kilo for a 360 kilo steer from Messrs I. E. & M. Gittins, Lower Ucheldre. Blonde D’Aquitaine: £1,150 for a 450 kilo steer from Messrs Probert & Probert, Lower Hill and 290p per kilo for a 355 kilo steer from the same vendor. British Blue: £1,110 for a 530 kilo steer from Messrs Davies, Monksfield Farm and 286p per kilo for four 325 kilo steers from Messrs J. A. Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm.
Heifers: Charolais cross: £900 and 243p per kilo for one 370 kilo heifer from Messrs Bowen & Bowen, Penthryn. Simmental cross: £920 for three 485 kilo heifers from Messrs W. S. Turner & Sons, Stone Acton Farm and 261p per kilo for five 310 kilo heifers from the same vendor. Limousin cross: £1,380 and 363p per kilo for a 380 kilo heifer from Messrs M. & A. Powell, Drefor. Blonde D’Aquitaine: £1,020 for three 475 kilo heifers from Messrs M. E. & G. E. Jones, Hafod and 255p per kilo for two 345 kilo heifers from Messrs Probert & Probert, Lower Hill. British Blue: £1,010 for a 465 kilo heifers from Mr E. Edwards, Bryncelyn and 258p per kilo for six 330 kilo heifers from Messrs J. A. Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Farm.
