Organic Farmer forges fresh links at government level

When Scottish organic farmer Chris Walton became more involved this year with Soil Association Scotland he discovered a wealth of opportunity to influence policy makers and represent the views of organic farmers throughout Scotland.

The Soil Association certifies over 70% of the organic market. As the biggest certification body in the UK it has an important role to play in policy making at national level. In Scotland Chris has been involved in developing the Organic Action Plan, setting out what organic food and drink is, helping to provide an overview of the sector and building in priorities for the future. He is also inputting in discussions on the impact of agriculture, climate change and greenhouse gasses. Chris’s industry experience gives new governmental plans a direct link to farmers on the ground.

“It is important to convey comments and concerns to and from Scottish farmers and growers to the Farmer & Grower board and Soil Association staff so that producers feel better connected with what is happening on a national level. Soil Association Scotland is doing a great job promoting organic food and farming and is active in encouraging other organisations to do the same. I am keen to share my experiences where it can aid this process”

“From a professional point of view, it is always good to know that there are specialists in the organisation that can provide up to date information, and third party information, research and literature to support the case for organic food and farming. My involvement with the Soil Association is also important in keeping me at the forefront of what is happening in the organic sector. As a business it is vital that I have an up to date picture of the market in which we are working.”

Along with his two business partners, Chris converted Peelham Farm on the Scottish Borders to organic in 2005. He says that the Soil Association’s support has been key throughout. Chris is attending the Highland Show this month to help other licensees and share his experience and understanding.
