The first winner of the Robin Maund Cup, donated in memory of a prominent Shropshire dairy farmer who died last spring, at Shrewsbury Auction Centre was Martin Jones of Asterley.

The cup, awarded for the best pedigree and commercial dairy cattle on offer, was donated by Mr Maund’s sister, Barbara, to auctioneers Halls’ catalogued dairy show and sale, which was sponsored by the Farmers Guardian.

The show and sale, judged by Adrian Jones of Garthmyl, attracted a fabulous entry of 29 quality heifers, one heifer calf and a Limousin bull.

Mr Jones (Durbyfield) took the silverware with a lovely Matson daughter out of a Brookroad dam which sold for £2,400 to Anthony Mathews, Whitchurch. Also at £2,400 was Burnbrae Twister Cydonia from Jack Taylor, of Webscott, which sold to Neale Sadler (Quinabrook).

Mr Taylor took the reserve championship with Burnbrae Dondee Duchess which also sold to Mr Mathews at £2,300. Heifers from Wilderley Hall Farms, Pulverbatch were inevitably to the fore with Wilderley Denethor Samantha 2, calved three weeks and giving 42 kilos, selling at £2,320 to Mr Mathews. Richard Howard was again prominent, with his best heifer by Mammoth selling for £2,200, while Andrew Shakeshaft, Cockshutt (Dilandy) sold a Crackholme Secure Red heifer for £2,200.

The 20-month-old Limousin bull from Messrs Heath realised £2,000.
