Loss of Royal Show has silver lining

The closure of one of the country’s biggest agricultural shows may have benefitted an event much closer to home.

Last year’s Royal Show, in Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, was the last. Organisers blamed falling visitor numbers, bad weather and foot-and-mouth.

But those making the final preparations for North Yorkshire County Show on Sunday [20] say entries for all sections for the event – held near Northallerton – are reporting marked increases.

Joint secretary Len Cragg, said: "From trade stand bookings through classes for cattle, sheep, show horses and heavy horses – as well as the poultry and fur sections – are all noticeably up this year.

"The sad loss of the Royal appears to have been North Yorkshire’s gain."

Organisers are confident they will improve on last year’s strong crowd, when 12,000 people came through the gates.

The 32nd North Yorkshire County Show takes place from 8am-5.30pm at Otterington Hall, between Northallerton and Thirsk.

Top of the bill this year are stunt horse displays by the daredevil team from Rockin’ Horse Productions, while the H & M Dog Display Team will wow and amuse the crowds with its entertaining canine antics.

An alpaca demonstration will provide an extra exotic dimension on the day.

Hounds from the Hurworth Hunt will also provide a main ring attraction, alongside other familiar favourites such as show jumping and heavy horses, traction engines, classic cars and motorcycles, classes for cattle, sheep, poultry (the show is the largest summer poultry show in Northern England), rabbits and ferrets, driving classes, horticulture and produce, arts, crafts, photography and the children’s classes, which include entries from local schoolchildren.

All appetites will be met, with regional food and drink showcased in the Yorkshire Food Marquee, trade stands, wide-ranging catering and a real ale bar supported by Nick Stafford’s Hambleton Ales. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Swale Valley Stompers.
