John Mercer starts as NFU Cymru Director

John Mercer starts as the new Director of NFU Cymru, following the recent retirement of Mary James.

John Mercer started with NFU Cymru in 2004 as a Farm Policy Adviser before moving to NFU Headquarters to take up a senior policy adviser position. For the past three years he has been NFU Regional Director in the West Midlands. Mary James retires after 40 years representing farmers and dealing with agricultural policy. Mary has been director of NFU Cymru for the past six years and was Head of Policy/Deputy Director for nine years before that.

Stephen James, President of NFU Cymru said, “We all wish Mary well in her retirement. John Mercer has worked his way up through the ranks of the NFU over recent years. I’m sure his knowledge and experience, including his farming background in Carmarthenshire, will ensure that NFU Cymru goes forward from strength to strength.”

Andy Robertson, Director General of the NFU said, “John’s appointment is a key one within the overall NFU structure and in particular, his leadership will ensure that NFU Cymru’s service and representation on behalf of its members will continue to be of the highest quality. On behalf of the Union I’d like to wish Mary James well in her retirement.”

John Mercer said, “I am absolutely delighted to be returning to Wales at a time when representation of NFU Cymru members has never been more important. I look forward to leading a team that I know is totally committed to looking after the interests of our members.”
