Innovative dairy hygiene products at the UK Dairy Day

For the dairy industry, lameness remains one of the most significant welfare issues affecting productivity, with over half the average dairy herd expected to experience lameness problems within a single 12 month period.

Progiene, a division of Rumenco, have targeted this common challenge with the development of Digicur. Progiene will be at this year’s UK Dairy Day showcasing the foot bathing product and the rest of their premium range of dairy hygiene solutions.

Progiene Product Manager, Alison Clark explains that on average each case of lameness costs dairy farmers over £170 per cow.

“Routine foot bathing remains one of the most common methods for treating and preventing lameness in the dairy sector,” she adds, “There is significant demand for a cost effective, quality foot bath product that has the capacity to address the needs of the modern dairy farmer,” comments Alison.

Digicur is a broad-spectrum disinfectant based on the compound glutaraldehyde. Containing no formalin or heavy metals, the product works by forming an invisible seal around the coronary band of the hoof. Drying on contact with immediate effect, it also has the capacity to cope with high levels of soiling.

Progiene have developed an innovative solution to address the needs and concerns of dairy farmers which has received a very positive reaction from the trade and farmers. Cattle have proven more willing to physically walk through the footbath and operators have stated how Digicur is a more pleasant product to deal with compared to alternative leading products.

“Digicur is an effective, niche product that is safe to use. The strong anecdotal on-farm evidence from farmers using Digicur, combined with efficacy tested lab results, is very promising. We believe we have a lot to offer the professional dairy farmer in all aspects of dairy hygiene,” Alison concludes.

Progiene will be on the Rumenco stand at the UK Dairy Day on 17 September: stand number 59, Hall 1.
