Growth will be green and UK should lead - Huhne

Speaking at the ADBA National Conference in Westminster, former Secretary of State for Energy Chris Huhne told delegates: "Let's knock on the head the idea that the UK is going further or faster than our European neighbours on renewables - this is simply not true. Of all the major Member States the UK has the lowest renewable energy target. But it is fundamentally wrong to say we shouldn't be in the lead.

"It is very important that green businesses stand up to be counted. If we don't have green growth we won't have any growth at all.

"Renewables are the future, this doesn't depend on anything that Lord Lawson or the Daily Mail say. People are entitled to their own opinions - however daft - but not to their own facts, and those are on the side of renewables."

Alongside his speech, ADBA chief executive Charlotte Morton announced that Mr Huhne will be joining ADBA on a part time basis as a Strategic Adviser. Charlotte Morton said:

“I am delighted that Chris Huhne will be working with ADBA to help us develop the best strategic position for the AD industry.

“Chris obviously brings a wealth of experience from his time as Secretary of State for Energy, Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment and as an MEP.

“Renewable energy support is clearly set to be a major issue in the run up to the next election, and indeed in Europe, and Chris’s help demonstrating the very significant value anaerobic digestion delivers will make a real difference.”
