Farm solar panels shine through planning constraints

Planning permission and Listed Building consent has been granted for 260 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels at a farm in Linby, Nottinghamshire.

The 60kW PV panel system will be located on an existing steel portal framed agricultural barn, supplying electricity from a renewable source to the farm.

The site of the PV panels is located near to a number of Listed Buildings including a large farmhouse, farm cottage, brew house, mill barn and threshing barn. The site is also located within the Nottingham-Derby Green Belt and the Linby Conservation Area.

Despite these constraints, Gedling Borough Council agreed that the proposed PV panels would result in an appropriate form of development within the area and would not have any detrimental impact on the openness of the Green Belt. The development would not have any undue impact upon the setting of the nearby Listed Buildings, the character of the Conservation Area nor the amenity of any neighbouring residential properties.

Jenny Salt of Fisher German comments "We are experiencing an increasing number of planning enquiries for the installation of solar PV on agricultural buildings. Solar panels are one of the easiest forms of renewable energy to obtain planning permission for as they are relatively unobtrusive.

"We have acted for a number of farmers and farm businesses looking to install PV technology and so far have a 100% planning approval rate."
