Farm safety at heart of free UK events this winter

A series of free one-day events focusing on health and safety in agriculture are taking place across the UK this winter. Organised by Lantra on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the events are designed to highlight common farm hazards and risks and the practical and safe precautions that can be taken to avoid them.

Sessions, which are held in both the morning and afternoon, consist of six scenarios/demonstrations taken from the key areas of machinery safety, trailer braking, safe use of ATVs and lift trucks, manual handling, working at heights, livestock handling and chemical use. All scenarios are demonstrated by Lantra’s qualified instructors who possess extensive experience and knowledge of agricultural health and safety.

Four SHADs have already taken place and proven to be extremely successful and popular with farmers, with overwhelmingly positive feedback received from those who attended. To date SHADs have been held in Inverurie and Hamilton in Scotland, Todmorden in West Yorkshire and Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

The next SHAD is due to run on 4 December at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire. In attendance will be Lantra’s recently-appointed CEO Marcus Potter who joined the organisation in May 2014.

Two further SHADs are scheduled for February 2015 in Staffordshire and Oxfordshire.
