News that Natural England is ready to provide derogations to agri-environment scheme rules to farmers affected by drought conditions has been welcomed by the CLA.
CLA Rural Adviser Donna Tavernor said: ’It is reassuring to know that Natural England appreciates that farm businesses are, even these days, very weather dependant and that is prepared to ease Environmental Stewardship rules in periods of adversity for a range of measures including cutting hay early for fodder, or supplementary feeding.
’This approach was much appreciated by Midlands farmers when applied during previous dry spells and I am sure that it will be equally welcomed in those areas currently struggling with severe rainfall shortages.’
